Viking Wolf (Vikingulven) 2023

Viking Wolf lives up to its promise of being Norway’s first werewolf movie. This new Netflix show doesn’t lie to its viewers; a wild lycan is really running around a small Norwegian town. But Stig Svendsen’s movie doesn’t have the usual start to a story like this. Instead, the werewolf myth has been changed to fit the Scandinavian setting. The end result is something new and different, even if it isn’t perfect.

Viking Wolf (originally called Vikingulven) is a serious movie, even though it has a silly name. It gives this creature feature the traits of modern Scandi-noir movies and TV shows. In the story, Thale Berg (Elli Rhiannon Müller Osbourne), a teenager from the city, moves to a place called Nyb after her father dies. The main character’s relationship with her mother (Liv Mjones) is strained because of his death, and that makes a big difference in what happens to Thale. Thale first meets the title creature at a party. What looks like a large wolf drags a random partygoer to her bloody death, but not before giving Thale a bite.

Viking Wolf looks like a typical police procedural thriller from Scandinavia. There are a lot of wide shots of peaceful, beautiful rural landscapes, but they’re not very interesting. Also, Thale’s mother is the stressed-out police officer who has to find out what killed that poor party guest and who attacked her own daughter. The stress from this case is added to the stress from her home life. Since Thale’s father died, she doesn’t like her mother, which is why she doesn’t ask for help when her health starts to get worse.
