Liam Neeson has been in so many similar movies lately that they’ve almost become their own subgenre. When he stars in a movie that is very different from the others, it stands out. True crime noirs don’t come out on screen as often as they used to, and if anyone could carry one, it would be Neeson. Marlowe is a true throwback to the crime-drama style of the 1940s and 1950s, both in terms of the story and the way it feels real. There’s a lot of good and bad here, but it all depends on how you look at it. Even though the movie looks and feels old, it adds nothing new to the genre. Even though some people might find the twists and turns confusing, the movie is still mostly interesting to watch, and Neeson does a lot to make it work. Even though he gives one of his best performances in a long time, the movie starts to lose steam as it tries to put all the pieces together at the end.
Set in late 1930s Los Angeles, Marlowe of course follows Philip Marlowe (Neeson), a gruff private detective who found himself roped into a large scale conspiracy as a result of being hired be an heiress named Claire (Kruger) to find her ex-lover Nico (François Arnaud). He had no idea what he would find when he started to look into what he thought was just a missing person case. Marlowe quickly discovered that there was a lot more to that story as things weren’t always necessarily how they appeared as he uncovered drugs, murder, and corruption along the way. When he found out the truth, it was more than just a case for him. It was a way for him to make up for what he had done. He had clearly been through his share of ups and downs, and this case may have helped him get back on his feet. Marlowe was a clever detective who used his lifetime of knowledge. During his investigation, it was fun to see how he did things and how he got along with other people. This investigation also had a lot of turns and twists that didn’t matter much in the end because the movie was more about the man than about his investigation, which was more interesting.
