After a rough Phase 4 that tried to move the MCU forward after the Infinity saga, Phase 5 is here to keep things going. Most of the movies and, for the first time, the TV shows in Phase 4 were pretty big changes. This was made possible by the launch of Disney+. With Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania, the third movie in the Ant-Man series, it doesn’t look like this strategy has changed. All of the other movies in this series have been on a smaller scale, but this third one is definitely a change. The movie is mostly a science fiction adventure through the Quantum Realm. People who were hoping for more than that will probably be disappointed, which may be why critics had mixed feelings about the movie, putting it on the same level as the unfairly criticized Eternals. Even so, it doesn’t add much to what is now known as the Multiverse Saga, other than a formal introduction to Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror (not counting the variant of him that appeared in the Season 1 finale of Loki). Even though the returning cast does a great job again this time, Majors steals the show and looks like a force to be reckoned with.
In Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scott Lang (Rudd), Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), Hope Van Dyne (Lilly), Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), and Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) were trapped in the Quantum Realm because of Quantum Mania. To stay alive and eventually get away, they had to find their way through uncharted territory and around different creatures and people who were in their way, all while the force known as Kang the Conqueror (Majors) was watching them. But after being stuck in the realm for 30 years, Janet thought there was a lot more to that story because the realm was different from what she remembered. There’s a backstory waiting to be told, and as the movie went on, the truth slowly came out because she knew more than she was letting on. Unsurprisingly, that story had something to do with Kang, who she knew from the past. In the end, the best parts of the movie were the Janet/Kang story and the characters themselves. In the meantime, the others were added to help move the story along. Even though there were more side stories, they weren’t nearly as interesting as Scott and Cassie’s time together, which helped them get back together after the Blip.
